16 - 19 Study Programme
At Sir Christopher Hatton Academy, we are committed to delivering an exceptional Sixth Form experience that fully meets the requirements of the 16-19 study programme, as outlined by the Department for Education. Our comprehensive programme ensures that students achieve academic success while developing the skills, knowledge, and character required to thrive in the future.
Academic Curriculum
Our Sixth Form offers a diverse range of courses, including 23 A-Level and 5 vocational qualifications, alongside the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and Core Maths. Students begin Year 12 with four subjects, refining their choices to three in Year 13 to ensure a tailored and focused approach. This breadth of choice allows every student to pursue a personalised programme of study that aligns with their interests and aspirations.
Structured Study Hours
All students participate in a minimum of 580 hours of planned activities per year, combining qualification and non-qualification activities. These include timetabled lessons, independent study periods, enrichment opportunities, and pastoral care sessions. Students are supported in managing their time effectively, with guidance on balancing academic demands with extracurricular pursuits.
English and Mathematics Resit Support
For students who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in GCSE English or Mathematics, we provide support within the timetable to support their progress. Resits are scheduled at the earliest opportunities in November and January, ensuring students can meet this essential requirement as part of their study programme.
Work-Related Learning
All Year 12 students complete a compulsory week of work-related learning during the summer term. This valuable experience enables students to develop employability skills, gain insight into potential careers, and enhance their personal statements or CVs. Preparation for work experience is embedded into tutor time and study periods, ensuring students feel confident and ready for the workplace.
Personal Development and PSHE Provision
Our pastoral curriculum supports the holistic development of every student, covering key topics such as mental health and wellbeing, personal safety, financial literacy, radicalisation and extremism, effective revision strategies, and preparation for post-18 life. These sessions, along with one-to-one guidance from form tutors and the VI Form team, ensure students are well-prepared to navigate the challenges of adulthood.
Careers Guidance and Future Pathways
We offer an extensive career programme to support students in exploring their future options:
UCAS Support: A dedicated UCAS Coordinator and form tutors guide students through every stage of their university applications. We provide an additional, bespoke programme for aspiring medics and veterinary candidates.
Apprenticeship Pathways: Tailored workshops help students craft CVs, apply for placements, and prepare for interviews. The Academy provides numerous opportunities for students to hear from apprenticeship providers as well as former students who have taken this pathway.
Careers Events: Our Careers Day and regular guest speakers from universities, employers, and training providers inspire students to explore diverse pathways. Our PSHE programme also provides our students with a wealth of information on their post-18 options so that they can make informed decisions on their future career.
Careers booster: Our Year 12 students all have a 1-hour enrichment slot on their timetables dedicated to completing activities related to their future pathways. These activities include supporting lessons in lower school, completing government courses on the .gov website, researching opportunities through Unifrog and completing a range of citizenship-related tasks within the VI Form. All activities can be included within the students’ personal statements once they begin to make their post-18 choices in Year 13 and help to differentiate Hatton students from their contemporaries elsewhere.
Leadership Opportunities and Community Engagement
Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles, such as joining our Sixth Form committees or acting as mentors for younger pupils. These roles help develop interpersonal, organisational, and leadership skills while fostering a sense of community and responsibility. Sixth Form students also have the opportunity to run societies, participate in enrichment clubs, and contribute to the wider academy environment through our Flourishing Leaders programme.
Enrichment Activities
Life at Sir Christopher Hatton Academy is more than just academic. Students participate in a variety of activities, from sports to cultural and social trips, that enrich their Sixth Form experience. Our vibrant student-led committees and societies provide further opportunities to explore personal interests, develop new skills, and meet peers with shared passions.
Outcomes and Destinations
We are proud of the exceptional outcomes achieved by our Sixth Form students, with results consistently exceeding local and national averages. The vast majority of students progress to high-ranking universities, apprenticeships, or employment. For more details, please refer to our Accountability Measures and Destination Information.
